Pablo Porragas, senior at Castle View High School in Castle Rock, has been named Student of the Month for December by the Rotary Club of Castle Rock.
Porragas is active in his school, his community and carries a grade point average of 4.12, ranking tenth in a class of 443.
James Calhoun, principal of Castle View High School, introduced Porragas to the Rotary Club at its Dec. 19 meeting.
Porragas has competed in soccer at the school for three years, has participated in club soccer for two years, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, a member of the Rotary youth Interact Club, in the National Honor Society and is president of the school’s medical club.
Calhoun said Porragas’ teachers call him an amazing student who uses his language skills to keep a foot in Spanish and English cultures at the school.
“He contributes to all his classes in an energetic and dynamic way,” said Calhoun.
He said Porragas was a founding member of the school’s medical club and also worked at the school as a youth peer minister.
Porragas told the club none of his accomplishments would have been possible “if I hadn’t been raised like my mom raised me.”
He said she was always there for him, making him believe he was capable of doing great things and inspiring others to do great things.
Porragas said he plans to attend either the University of Chicago or the University of Colorado at Boulder to study integrated physiology with the intention of becoming a doctor.
